Senior Studies

The Senior Studies program incorporates Years 11 and 12. Students undertake the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) which is the certificate that the majority of students in Victoria receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education. VCE provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university or TAFE and to employment.

Year 11

Year 11 is the first year of the Senior Studies program.  Students have the opportunity to participate in a program that will contribute to their Victorian Certificate of Education or their Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC).

The VPC is a flexible program which is designed for those students in Years 11 and 12 that may not be ready to start their VCE. It provides students with a standards-based certificate that does not have a mandated period in which it must be completed.  The curriculum is designed to allow students to complete it in a timeframe that suits their capability. The VPC supports students to transition to the VCE, entry level VET or employment.

Students in Year 11 generally undertake Units 1 and 2 subjects which are semester-long units.  It is possible for Year 11 students to select a Unit 3 and 4 subject as part of their six required subjects they must complete.

Year 12

Year 12 is the final year of the Senior Studies program.  Students have the opportunity to participate in a program that will finalise their Victorian Certificate of Education or their Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC). Students in Year 12 generally undertake Units 3 and 4 subjects which are semester-long units that are taken as a sequence. Students are required to complete five subjects to meet their certificate requirements.

To be awarded the VCE, students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 16 units. These units must include three units of English and three sequences of Unit 3 and 4 subjects other than English.

Vocational Education and Training refers to enhanced senior school studies, which enable a secondary student to combine their VCE or VCAL studies with vocational training.

Features of VET:

  • It is an accredited vocational education and training program (usually over two years).
  • It enables students to complete a nationally recognised vocational qualification (e.g. Certificate II in Hospitality) and a senior secondary certificate at the same time.
  • It allows students to go directly into employment or receive credit towards further study.
  • It focuses on students developing industry specific and workplace skills.
  • It is a vocationally oriented school program designed to meet the needs of industry.
  • During the work placement, a student will undertake specific tasks in order to demonstrate competence. They will be regularly monitored and may be assessed on the job.

For more information on VET subjects or SBATs please refer to the Year 10, 11 & 12 Handbook 2024 or alternatively seek the advice of a Careers’ Practitioner.
