Science

At Reservoir High, Science is about acquiring knowledge through investigation, experimentation, discussion and communication. Students explore the world around them by studying various topics and use technologies to obtain and record their experimental findings. Students are encouraged to ask the questions ‘how’, ‘why’ and ‘what if’ in an endeavour to understand their world and the universe in which they live, and all the phenomena that present themselves. It is with this spirit that Science is delivered at Reservoir High by the dedicated Science faculty.

The Science curriculum in Years 7 to 10 is based on the Australian Victorian Essential Learning Standards incorporating Science Knowledge; Science at work; Thinking; Information and Communication Technologies; and Personal and Interpersonal Learning. Assessment in these years consists of class work, experimental and investigative work, topic tests, assignments and projects.

In Years 7 to 9, Science is compulsory. In these years, a solid foundation is built through various topics in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Space and Physics.

In Year 10, Science is an elective and attracts dedicated Science students who are eager to pursue challenging and rewarding future pathways. Students have the opportunity to choose topics of interest, including: Chemicals in Action; Human Biology and Disease; Physics: Unlocking the Universe; and Psychology.

At VCE, students are given the opportunity to further pursue Science subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology. In all Year 10 and 11 subjects in 2016, students will conduct their own research and have the opportunity to present it to staff and parents at our inaugural science fair!

The Science faculty at Reservoir is committed to providing the best opportunities for our students. The Science courses and extra-curricular activities offered reflect the needs and interests of our students. As part of the Science program, students have the opportunity to participate in various competitions including the Science and Engineering Challenge, Bridge Building, and the Brain BEE.
