English as Additional Language

Reservoir High School offers English as an Additional Language from Year 7 to VCE. This is a structured program of parallel classes in Years 7-10. Students who participate in this program are a diverse group of different ages and different stages of learning English. These students are from different first language backgrounds and some have varying amounts of education in their first language. Many of our EAL students have achieved outstanding results in VCE over the years. Our students in EAL are studying in smaller classes allowing them to develop English language skills required for success in their other subjects.

In teaching English as an Additional Language we focus on the development of skills in three main areas:

Speaking and Listening: we encourage the development in comprehension of spoken English for the purpose of communication.

Reading: we focus on the development of reading in English for the purpose of communication.

Writing: we encourage students to develop skills in composing, editing and presenting.

Our students undertake a study of texts in print and in film as well as issues in the media at each year level. We work with the English mainstream teachers and focus on the same themes.
