Languages

The Australian Curriculum highlights the importance of learning languages. Reservoir High School offers Italian and Chinese (Mandarin) from Years 7-12. All students will study Italian and Chinese (Mandarin) for a semester in Year 7. Students will select a language to study in Years 8-9 (commencing in 2021). At the VCE level, Chinese First Language (CFL) and Second Language Advanced (CSLA) are offered.

Students will be focusing on developing vocabulary knowledge and sentence structure in order to be able to use the language in a variety of contexts and formats, such as reading, writing, speaking and listening. They develop communication skills through a series of classroom activities using the language.

The areas of study are based on current topics, short reading texts, poems, scenarios, films, comprehension exercises, songs and a variety of research assignments to enhance intercultural knowledge and cross-curriculum awareness.

The Languages program provides students with a variety of ICT resources, including iPads, computers and interactive whiteboards. Students develop their language skills through a variety of multimedia and online programs and activities.

Language students at Reservoir High School are also given the opportunity to take part in rich cultural activities including excursions, incursions, cooking classes, cultural craft activities and film studies.

The Languages program strengthens student’s understanding of the nature of language, culture, and the processes of communication. The Languages program will report on the following study areas:

  • Understanding
  • Communicating
  • Intercultural Capability
